Independent Hose Company #6, has been located at 3 Campwoods Road since 1949. The company responds to alarms on the North-Eastern & East sides of the village, the Northeast side of the Town of Ossining and to all general alarms. The company celebrated 100 years of service to Ossining in 2011. This autonomous company was formed by citizens and business owners who were concerned that the existing fire companies were too far away to provide timely reponses, coupled with a decision from the Village Board to not allow a company on the east side of the village. After a year of independent service, Independent Hose Company was admitted into the Ossining Fire Department. Independent, which owns its quarter's property, enjoys one of the nicest buildings and grounds in the village; the building has four floors, consisting of a weight room, two bays, a meeting room, a fellowship room, as well as a seperate office for it's officers. There have been seven chiefs of the Ossining Fire Department from Independent Hose, they are: Chief James T. Coutant (1925-1927), Chief Charles O. Carlson (1939-1940), Chief James K. Coleman (1951-1952), Chief Robert P. Vincent (1961-1962), Chief Gunnar L. Neilson (1975-1976), Chief William G. Pointer (1985-1986), and Chief John G. Crawford (1995-1996). Independent Hose Company is the only company that operated two motorized apparatus in the village simultaneously, and two loco mobiles. Our current apparatus is a 2018 KME Severe Service pumper. Independent Hose Company also had the first active female firefighter in the State of New York, Mary E. Donohue. She joined the company in 1925.
